Poplar Social Club first opened its doors in 1911, when a small group of local residents wanted a friendly place to meet, share a drink and unwind after work.
Back then, Accrington was a busy mill town and community hubs were the heartbeat of local life. The founders of Poplar Social pooled their time, energy and savings to turn a simple idea into a welcoming club where everyone could feel at home.
Early nights at the club were modest but lively: a few pints, a game of cards, dominoes. Word spread quickly that Poplar Social was a place where you would always find a familiar face, a warm welcome and a bit of fun at the end of the day.

The club became a second home for many local people. Generations of the same family would come through the doors: grandparents who remembered the smoky concert room and members lounge, parents who danced to 70s and 80s hits, and younger members discovering their first live band on our stage.
Working with local groups, teams and charities, we hosted raffles, benefit nights and presentation evenings, always with the aim of keeping the community together and giving people a place to celebrate the moments that matter.

While we are proud of our history, Poplar Social Club today is a fresh, modern venue with a buzzing nightlife feel. Our large function room can host up to 400 guests, with a stage, dance floor and updated sound and lighting that are perfect for live music, DJs and themed parties.
The bar has been fully refurbished, offering a wide choice of drinks at friendly prices, and our members’ lounge gives you a relaxed space for a quieter pint, a game of snooker, darts or pool, or just a catch-up with friends.
We now sell tickets for many events online, making it easier than ever to secure your spot at live bands, comedy nights, social dances and special themed evenings – all while keeping the same welcoming, community atmosphere that started it all.
